The EU-funded Fair MusE project works to promote fairness for music creators and industry stakeholders in a landscape increasingly shaped by online platforms and their algorithms.
We take an interdisciplinary approach to build a more transparent, competitive, and sustainable music ecosystem in Europe, bringing together leading experts from law, economics, political science, and computer science.
Fair MusE explores how online platforms and their recommendation algorithms influence music consumption, how they impact artists, industry professionals, and businesses, and what legal responses exist in the EU to address these challenges. We engage directly with composers, performing artists and their collective representatives, labels, music publishers, and other key players to increase transparency in how the industry operates, improve data collection practices, and assess the risks that come with the dominance of major platforms.
To make a real impact, Fair MusE aims to develop practical tools and solutions, including:
- A data-sharing model to improve transparency for music publishing and recording rights revenues (Music Copyright Infrastructure)
- A set of key indicators showing the economic and cultural value of Europe’s music sector (Music Data Dashboard)
- A demonstrator to evaluate music streaming services and social media platforms based on fairness criteria (Fairness Score)
- A set of policy recommendations to enhance fairness, competition, and transparency in the EU music industry (White Paper).
In our presentation for SPOT+ 2025, we'll introduce to the findings from our user-involving data-donation campaign targeting Spotify, Apple Music and YouTube Music, and the results from our analysis of the role of EU law and policy making initiatives in the digital music industry.
