Anybody can license a massive hit song if they have enough money and a lack of creative imagination. But what happens when filmmakers and music supervisors decide, for creative or budgetary reasons, that they want to color outside the lines musically? From psychedelic Thai tracks to Danish-language electronic music to vintage Afrobeat, there is a vast and variegated world of music that exists outside of the world of major labels and mainstream hits.
This panel dives into the advantages - and challenges - of operating outside of the confines of the major label system. Is there a place in an increasingly homogenized media landscape for non-English-language music? For small indies making unusual art? We’ll explore how this world works and why there might be a place for us outliers in the sync landscape after all.
