In a world marked by political instability, war, climate crisis, and growing polarization, art and culture are increasingly called upon to provide meaning, connection, and perspective. It is no longer a question of why art and culture matter – but how we actively protect them, practice them, and allow them to drive positive change. The panel How We Protect Art and Culture in a Time of Crisis will explore the role of art and culture, and the concrete ways festivals, live organizers, artists, and cultural actors can safeguard artistic freedom, navigate activism, and take responsibility without compromising integrity.
The panel will examine questions like; how do cultural actors defend artistic freedom in an increasingly polarized landscape? How do festival organizers navigate their position as platforms for change? And how can art and culture be used as tools to respond to chaos and fragmentation? The conversation will examine the relationship between cultural resilience and cultural action, and highlight how Danish and international cultural actors can move from intention to implementation – insisting not only on the relevance of art and culture, but on the concrete ways we protect and practice them today.
The panel is presented by ‘Music and Music Festivals as Change Drivers’, a project led by the Roskilde Festival Group.
