Stemmer i Voks is a project created by core members of the folktronica ensemble Sorten Muld. The music is based on a collection of raw phonograph recordings from the Jutland heath, dating back to the early 1900s—crackling wax cylinders preserving the songs that still lived among the humble folk of the heath on the brink of a new era. Songs that, despite the hardships of the time, sing of humanity’s unyielding pursuit of happiness and love.
The voices from the wax cylinders blend with Ulla Bendixen in new twilight-dark compositions, featuring harmonium, mandolin, detuned piano, cello, double bass, and subtle electronics prominently in the soundscape. With great care, Stemmer i Voks extends a hand into the past, bringing the people and stories of the heath into our world—bridging time and generations.
