Digital transformations have challenged the working conditions and financial sustainability for artists—particularly those outside the tier of chart-topping, stadium-filling superstars. Ongoing debates about the shortcomings of streaming revenue, precarious employment, and mental health struggles reflect these concerns. At the same time, substantial evidence for significantly better circumstances in pre-digital times remains scarce.
This presentation addresses these issues, reporting on a small-scale investigation into how artists navigate revenue streams. By comparing conditions in the 1990s and today, the study focuses on the industry’s ‘middle layer’ and examines continuity and change in income opportunities and career sustainability through qualitative interviews with Danish artists and industry professionals.
