Hilary Saunders, Managing Editor, No Depression Magazine (USA)

– “My goal is to tell stories about roots music that have not yet been told or tell them in new ways, and highlight voices that are not necessarily represented in American mainstream media. So Folk Spot Denmark in particular is really interesting for me. To listen to what is considered local and traditional music that to foreign ears sounds very Germanic in a lot of ways were really educational and enlightening for me.”

Chris Frayer, Artistic Director, Winnipeg Folk Festival (CAN)

– “Denmark has a wonderful tradition of folk music that is very appealing to Canadian folk-aficionados, and Folk Spot Denmark is a great opportunity to have a boutique music experience in Denmark and have everything curated and brought to Tønder. It has been a fantastic trip.”

Si Hawkins, Freelance Journalist (UK)

– “Having just seen Trio Svin, that is the band you want to talk about and immediately get off and tell everyone about that band and bring them over, and you could see the reaction in the audience was amazing. Their gig is clearly a happening, and it is the perfect thing, when you see a gig and start thinking of becoming a promotor yourself.”

John Smith, Associate Director, Smithsonian Folkways Recordings (USA)

– “What has been most helpful to me is being keyed into what is actually happening in contemporary Danish music. There is certainly a lot of interesting things that we would like to keep our eyes on.”

Tarmo Noormaa, Program Director, Viljandi Folk Music Festival (EST)

– “I am impressed of the energy of the folk music scene in Denmark. We are both by the Baltic Sea, and a lot of the repertoire and musical taste have travelled across the sea. It is a common tradition, but it is played a little bit differently, which is interesting and at the same time familiar. It is a special combination, and I think that there can be more musical exchange between our countries.”

Stéphane Turcotte, Acadia International, Disporas Music (CAN)

– “Folk Spot Denmark brings great opportunities to visit another country and to create new opportunities for artists in Canada, and hopefully being able to export some Scandinavian or Danish artists to Canada and vice versa.”

Mark Pedersen, Founder, West Denmark Heritage Council (USA)

– “Danish music is not exactly a stable of what you hear in the United States, so it is really nice to come over here and hear so many different groups all at one time. They are tremendous musicians in what they do and you can tell that they work really hard – Folk Spot is the only place where you are going to get something like this.”

Kristof Van den Broeck, Muziekclub ‘t EY (BE)

– “I am here to look for new folk music for my music club in Belgium called tÉY, and I have seen some concerts that could work in Belgium as well. Yesterday I saw VÍÍK, which is a quite new project and you already feel now that it is good, and that it will develop.”

Michael Hohnschild, Freelancer and DJ, Stelle FM Hitradio (DE)

– “I like to meet people here and connect to people and singers, and play them in our special radio show Route 66 in Germany, and we have found a lot of material here at Folk Spot that we will play in the future.

Devon Leger, Founder, Hearth Music (USA)

– “I was really happy to hear the showcases and then go explore and just see the culture being lived around here, and that is what makes me appreciate this. You get to see the bands, and also where it all comes from.”

Rob Oakie, Executive Director and co-founder, Music PEI (CAN)

– “I came to Folk Spot because I wanted to see what is happening in Denmark for folk music. It is an amazing festival and it is a great place to discover. Folk Spot is great because we get to experience a lot of different kinds of music. There has been so much great music here that there is a lot to be interested in.”
