Free summer concerts in Aarhus
Niklas Runge plays airy indie pop that is carried by the singer’s impressive vocals. The songs possess an honest fervour and vulnerability both when it comes to the lyrics and compositions. The lyrics play out in a melancholy and oneiric universe, which is beautifully reflected in the music video for Niklas Runge’s debut single ‘Roots’, which was released on the 12th of April this year.
Although he keeps his feet on the ground of popular music, you sense the inspiration from classical music, which forms a fascinating contrast to the pop and rock elements that remain the backbone of the songs.
It is going to be beautiful and intense when Niklas Runge enters the SPOT Royal stage this summer to repeat the success from SPOT 2019, where he played a packed HeadQuaters as part of the Music Cities Network.
Klaus Handsome & Gadens Løse Fugle
Together with four members of Danish Saybia, the troubadour Klaus Handsome has formed a new band, whose name refers to the Gasolin song ‘Hva’ gør vi nu, lille du?’. The band met each other when Klaus Handsome played support for Saybia in 2016, which became the beginning of close musical collaboration. And what started out as an invitation to do just one single recording of one of Klaus’s songs in Saybia’s studio soon became the recording of an entire album, and the band thus became a reality.
On the debut album, which was released on the 19th of April this year, the pop rock music revolves around Danish lyrical poetry and a popular spirit. Klaus Handsome & Gadens Løse Fugle will release the good spirit at the SPOT Royal Stage at this summer’s first open concert event at the iconic round stage at Åboulevarden after SPOT.
KOM VI LØBER
Lone Slot Nielsen is the woman behind KOM VI LØBER, and her music toys with contrasts both when it comes to the lyrics and to the compositions. The singer’s voice gets into your head as she performs the playful lyrics on top of unorthodox guitar themes in an electronic indie rock-like pop universe. The lyrics find a large part of their inspiration in Danish lyrical poetry, where she clearly feels at home. The lyrics both look forward and back, and among other things, our own time as a time of unrest and upheaval informs the lyrics and themes on the debut album ‘Sct. Hans’.
Verdens Sidste Idé
This Danish-lyrics band played at SPOT 2018, and they have since released three singles, all of which have received plenty of kudos from the Danish music critics. When premiering on the Danish radio channel P6 Beat, their latest single, ‘Et Andet Liv’ was introduced with these words, “It’s Danish, it is epic, it is absolutely fantastic”.
They also receive lots of praise for their live gigs that really let the original, Danish lyrics and the effective rock music come alive. Synthesizers, horns and vodacoders are added to the rock compositions, and you really feel the savvy hands of Dennis Ahlgren, who in addition to being the band’s guitarist is also the producer.
Verdens Sidste Ide have announced more releases in the course of 2019, which we may get a foretaste of when they take over the SPOT Royal Stage.
Oliver Dengsø is an Aarhus-based singer/songwriter whose music exudes melancholy, bruised romance and complete honesty. In the lyrics, we find themes like the run-down, the dreamy and the dizzying distant. The framework of the lyrics is a particular kind of indie folk with a touch of electronic ambience. Dengsø has been praised for his rusty tone of voice, which is a central element in his music and it takes the listener on a heartfelt journey through broken relationships and ironic tales of destiny. A mood and musical setup that make you think of classical singer/songwriter tradition from the 1960s, which in Oliver Dengsø’s universe, however take place in strange, Twin Peaks-like, dream landscapes. Take the journey into this musician’s wondrous universe when he plays at the SPOT Royal Stage this summer.
Many people may primarily associate Nicolai Noa’s deep voice with Magnolia Shoal’s grand rock universe, but now the singer has embarked on a solo career in his own name, and he is currently adding the finishing touches to his debut EP, ‘Gælden’, which is to be released this spring. The first single from the debut ‘På Tid’ was released on the 22nd of February, and it heralds a lighter more poppish sound than previously although the darkness is still lurking beneath the surface. Nicolai Noa takes on everyday situations, and strikes a tone that is both self-critical and critical of society while also finding room for more straightforward and melancholy hits.
Nicolai Noa is still one of a kind, both when it comes to his sound and his lyrics. The emotional core is accompanied by something playful, melancholy and captivating. Despite having only released one single from his soon-to-be-released debut EP, he has already played lived at several festivals and at significant venues since his debut concert at Pumpehuset’s outdoor venue Byhaven in May last year.
When playing live, he is accompanied by an acclaimed quintet so there is plenty of reason to look forward to his concert at the SPOT Royal Stage.
There is an unrestrained quality to the Danish singer and songwriter Nanna Bech, who, to borrow a phrase from Danish music magazine Gaffa, “serve up some monumental songs in small disguises”. The minimalist set-up and Bech’s gentle and girly voice form a stark contrast to the lyrics, which are confrontational, strange and at times macabre. Nordic folk noir and sombre Americana meet when Bech plays songs from her debut album, ‘I Could Kill You In a Thousand Ways’. The songs have narratives and lyrics that you want to immerse yourself in and understand, and in that way a very personal room is created around the music. Nanna Bech also has the courage to loosen the reins a bit at times, and that also becomes one the really strong points on an album whose surface may seem deceptively calm.
On the fifth of October last year, M. Rexen released the debut album ‘An Endless Sea of Honey’, which stands as the first part of the trilogy ‘The United Kingdoms’. Several of the singles from the album have been played on nationwide Danish radio stations P6 Beat, P3 and P4. The second instalment of the trilogy, ‘Animals of the Frozen Cloud’, was released on the 15th of March this year, and the release was celebrated with a critically acclaimed concert at Lille Vega in Copenhagen.
M. Rexen is a distinctive artist and he is often described as a globetrotter in inner and outer space. He was born in the United Arab Emirates and now lives in a yurt at some unknown location in Denmark.
His peculiar and personal story is reflected in the music he composes without conventional constraints. This is part of what makes it hard to put a label on the music as one senses experimental, tribal and commercial elements in his music.
With his impressive vocals and indefinable artistic expression, M. Rexen is a fascinating new name on the Danish and Scandinavian music scene. Recently he stunned the music critics with his memorable performances at SPOT, and he is ready to do it again this summer at the SPOT Royal Stage.
For years, Kristine Hoelgaard has played at the Danish songwriting stages fine-tuning her songs. Now she is about to release her debut album, which is situated in a genre cross field of electronic and handplayed, where the acoustic elements get the room they deserve.
The music is inspired by the traditional songwriter tradition and good, solid ear-catcher pop, and the songs are brimming with joyful pop folk with thoughtful lyrics full of gratitude and autumn colours performed by a great voice that really hits you. Kristine writes songs to reach people and with a hope to inspire people and that the music may resonate with the audience and will become part of the soundtrack of their own lives.
The concert at SPOT Royal will be an acoustic performance with Kristine Hoelgaard. An atmospheric, intimate session with one of Denmark’s most promising upcoming pop folk artists!
Shy shy shy
After five years on the Danish music scene and the release of an EP and an album, Shy shy shy are back, and with them they have a brand new critically acclaimed EP ‘Gloss’. The EP is accompanied by a beautiful music video for the track ‘Neon’ as well as a large Danish tour for the duo consisting of Astrid Cordes and Simon Kjelgaard, and the tour includes a stopover at the SPOT Royal Stage.
The duo’s return was heralded last winter when the comedy drama youth series Doggystyle was a remarkable hit for DR on its streaming platform. Shy Shy Shy contributed the title track of the award-winning youth show, ‘Doggystyle (Pretty Please)’, as well two other songs that were also written for the show. All three tracks as well as two completely new tracks, ‘Neon’ and ‘Feels like Home’, are included on the EP, where as the usual the soft pop harmonies meet with crisp vocals in a seductive and multifaceted sound. Shy Shy Shy are a strong Danish live act with plenty of experience and confident stage performance that never forgets the connection with the audience. They are clearly an act you should look forward to at the round SPOT Royal Stage in Aarhus this summer.
