The models for how streams are calculated and royalties are distributed continue to be discussed. In early 2023, Universal Music announced initiatives with both Tidal and Deezer to make the current economic models more ‘artist friendly’, where other stakeholders focus their attention on a ‘User Centric’ payment system. In his presentation, Frederik Juul introduces a range of alternative payment systems from his ongoing PhD research and discusses their financial impact on rights-holders.
Presenter: Frederik Juul, PhD, Université Sorbonne; earlier artist manager, ATC Management
