Name: Tom Johnson

Company: Gold Flake Paint

Based in: Glasgow, Scotland

Can you tell us a bit about the media’s history and profile? Gold Flake Paint started as blog back in 2010, running for a full eight years with daily posts covering hidden treasures and long-form interviews with higher profile artists. In the Summer of 2018 we transitioned from a website into a physical publication, and launched Issue One of A Music Journal in September that year. We’re set to make four journals in 2019 (Winter, Spring, Summer, Autumn) each of which will consist of in-depth conversations, new music recommendations, personal essays, and more.

– and a bit about the acts you personally have covered recently? Our three cover stars so far have been Mitski (Issue One), Sharon Van Etten (Issue Two), and Big Thief (Issue Three, released in May). We’ve also featured conversations with the likes of Weyes Blood, Cate Le Bon, The Twilight Sad, Jamila Woods, Nilufer Yanya, Conor Oberst & Phoebe Bridgers, Lucy Dacus, Iron & Wine, and many more. My favourite kind of music is sad American country-rock that makes you stare into the distance, so the focus of the magazine is often on songs/albums/artists that move us emotionally in some way.

What was the moment you decided you wanted to work with music? I think it was just when I realised how much more music meant to me than anything else in my life and how little any other kind of work appealed to me. I had no idea what to do though, and it can be very difficult to make space for yourself. So in the end I just took a leap of faith.

What are your favourite Danish acts? I’ve been a huge Efterklang fan for a long time, so I’m very excited to see them for the first time in a long time. I think the great thing about festivals like Spot are the discoveries you make when you least expect it. I think I’m looking forward to that element of surprise the most.

Best show you’ve ever seen hands down? Sufjan Stevens on the Age of Adz tour, no question. Just so beautiful/ridiculous/mind-blowing.

If you want to save your favourites we need you to log on first. Choose one of the following ways:

Socialt medie login

Social media logon

When you use one of the services below (Google or Facebook) to login we get access to very little information about you. We only store your name and a unique number we get from the service - in other words: we cannot read your emails, view your contacts etc.

Log on anonymously

You can save your favorites without logging in using a social media login. With this method we can neither see nor save your email address, location, phone number or anything else about you. In other words, you are completely anonymous in relation to the festival.

If this is the first time you use this feature, click on the 'generate code' button below to create a new unique code.

You should store that code somewhere. If you want to sync your favorites in this browser with another device (phone / tablet / computer) then enter the same code on the other device.

If you have already made a code on another device, you can enter that code in the text box below, and the favorites in your devices will be synchronized as soon as you are logged on.
